Salento Summer heats up with the approach of one of the most anticipated and spectacular, La Notte della Taranta August 6 to 21, and the grand final concert on August 24. A must for those who this year will spend the holidays in Puglia, in the area that for some years now has drawn crowds of tourists attracted by the liveliness of the seaside and the irresistible temptation of golden beaches, not to mention the flavors of genuine and tasty cuisine.

The Taranta Night has been celebrating the therapeutic rite of pizzica since 1998: tambourines playing incessantly at a feverish pace to free the victim (usually a woman) bitten by the tarantula, the dangerous poisonous spider, and thus dissolve the spell fighting the poison, and heal her. There are other variants of pizzica, like the dance of courtship between men and women and the “dance of the knives” also known as fencing pizzica.

This year the big concert is scheduled for August 24 in Melpignano, in the province of Lecce, while the complete calendar of the festival’s touring concerts includes fifteen dates in  cities and towns of Salento: Corigliano d’Otranto, Zollino, Martignano, Sternatia, Sogliano Cavour, Soleto, Calimera, Castrignano dei Greci, Cutrofiano, Carpignano Salentino, Martano, Lecce, Alessano, Otranto, Cursi. Songs, dances and explosive choreographies will fill the scene in a musical journey, exciting and engaging, to the presence of tens of thousands of spectators, who, stars of the party just as the performers on stage, will dance to the rampant rhythm of drums and accordions.. The Concert master is Giovanni Sollima, a classically trained musician but also an author and performer of contemporary music, invited to reinterpret the local musical tradition classics,  relying on a group of about thirty of the best musicians of the rediscovery of Salento, and elements of the festival’s popular Orchestra. Together with him many guests who have agreed to confront their music and their dance with the tradition of Salento, will be performing, like dancer Miguel Angel Berna, Niccolò Fabi, Max Gazzé and Roby Lakatos.

In fifteen years the Festival della Taranta, which is sponsored and organized by the homonymous Foundation, has become the main festival in Italy and one of the most famous folklore events in Europe. Its success can most likely be ascribed to, in addition to the recovery of pizzica and the collective ritual of this feast, its fusion with other music ranging from world music to rock, from jazz to symphonic.

Over the years La Notte della Taranta has even acquired an international dimension. Last June, the Popular Orchestra “La Notte della Taranta” played with Goran Bregovic at Parco della Musica in Rome. In mid-July it participated in concerts that were held in New York and Boston with musician Mauro Pagani, and in Tunisia for the International Festival of Carthage. As if to say, from Salento to the rest of the world.
