Carlo Porta Mountain Hut, the poetry of the mountain for Milanese

Carlo Porta Mountain Hut is located at the foot of Grignetta, the socalled “mountain of the Milanese”. Located 1426 meters above sea level, at the base of Piani dei Resinelli, it was built in 1911 by the will of Alessandro Clerici and Carlo Porta, the poet’s nephew, thanks to donations from celebrities, bankers and wealthy intellectuals of the Milan of the time.

The building, made of pre-Nouveau style, has the elegance of a high altitude hotel with the wood decorated fireplace, the lavish stairway, brass handles and floral decorations. Outside “The Italian alpine trooper”, the bronze statue by sculptor Michele Vedani, dominates the landscape.

The hut, which revived thanks to the C.A.I. (Italian Alpine Club) of Milan and to Claudio Trentani, offers the simple accommodation of the Lombardy mountains. The accommodation is basic, and the cuisine authentic. The rooms have two, three or six beds with shared bathrooms, and the local products have the highest quality: Valsassina cheeses, the Valtellina wines and olive oil and fresh water fish. Pizzoccheri, tagliatelle with chestnut or Sassella, gnocchi, ravioli and dumplings are all made by the Trentani family, as well as the desserts.

From the hut starts a trail network for all types of difficulty and length ranging from family walks to several days trekking that, touching various mountain huts, covers the entire Grigne ring. Also, in a few minutes you get to the “Direttissima”, one of the most beautiful footpaths of the PreAlps.

The spiers of Grignetta besides, are a real “garden of climbing”, unique in Europe.

As for trips for the less experienced guests the hut provides mountain guides offering courses in mountaineering and climbing.

For those wishing to spend a few days at Easter at the hut, Claudio Trentani also offers a delicious local menu: goat cheese with chives, spring quiche with asparagus, chestnut noodles with lamb stew, venison stew with polenta, cold cuts,  green sauce eggs and a delicious dessert. Not to be missed!

How to get there

from Milan:

Take the road to Lecco northbound. Once you reach Lecco, past the first tunnel, take the exit for Valsassina and cross another tunnel, until you reach Ballabio (first roundabout turn left). Follow the directions uphill for Pian dei Resinelli (14 hairpin turns) and when you reach the top, just walk or move further with the car.

Just at the entrance of the square proceed uphill where you see the bakery and take the road that goes to the left, following the sign: without ever leaving the road in twenty to thirty minute walking, or in a short time by car you will reach the upper square, go to the barrier, then you will see the hut.
