Twentieth Century Exhibition in Forlì

Mostra Novecento Arte

The ‘Twentieth Century Art and life in Italy between the two world wars’ exhibition is staged at the Museums San Domenico in Forlì, from 2 February to 16 June. The show is organized and promoted by the Foundation of Savings of Forlì in collaboration with the Municipality. It celebrates the “return to order”, from the postwar period after the First World War to the end of World War II, with particular attention to the twenties and thirties. In this climate you can feel the tension of architects, painters and sculptors, but also designers, graphic designers, advertisers, cabinet makers, jewelers and fashion designers, towards a thorough review of the artist role. This was a phase of profound renewal of the arts in Italy.

The works recall the past, the new-found harmony between tradition and modernity and, more specifically, the main occasions when artists lent themselves to celebrate the ideology and myths proposed by Fascism through public architecture mural painting and monumental sculpture. Visiting the exhibition, you will find to follow a path through the Fascist period and the major issues faced by artists who have joined the directives of the regime. The eyes look at a all-round vision of the relationship between the arts and the expressions of the customs and life. Paintings, sculptures, cartoons for frescoes, graphic works, wall charts, furniture, furnishings, jewelry, clothes tell about a new relationship between art and the public.

The exhibition is divided into a variety of experiences ranging from metaphysics, magical realism and great mythologies of the twentieth century, bearing the signature of painters such as De Chirico, Casorati, Dottori, Maccari, Guttuso, or sculptors such as Martini, Andreotti, Biancini, Baroni, Thayaht. Retrieving the relationship between painting and architecture also means returning to the Italian Fifteenth Century. So contemporary artists are inspired by the precise realism of names such as Mantegna, Giotto, Masaccio and Piero della Francesca.
