Relais San Maurizio, the magic of the Langhe in an unforgettable Luxury Spa Resort

Relais San Maurizio - vista panoramica

San Maurizio monastery is situated on one of the five historic Salt Roads, in the core of Langhe, a charming portion of Piemonte known for its white truffles and fine wines. In ancient times, these roads were covered to bring the precious commodity from the Ligurian Sea to beyond the Alps. And right here, in the hills of Santo Stefano Belbo, where Franciscan monks established their refuge, lies the Relais San Maurizio, of the Relais & Châteaux chain.

Soul of this Luxury Spa Resort is the salt, which has always been precious and irreplaceable in  health treatment.

La Via del Sale Medical & Beauty Spa is a unique spa at the Relais San Maurizio headed by Dr. Angelo Cerina, a board member of the Thalassotherapy Research Centre for the Milan University. The spa features a rooftop terrace, an indoor pool, a hammam, a gym and the Grotta del Sale (Salt Cave), natural crevice in the rock where you plunge in the beneficial water of San Maurizio during detoxifying and rejuvenating thalassotherapy treatments.

San Maurizio water flows from the rock on which the old monastery stands. It’s rich in trace elements such as magnesium, sodium, copper and iron, also present in seawater. Because of this characteristic, the water of the monastery has a peculiar effect, it feels sweet and velvety, transmitting to the body a natural feeling of well-being, as if it were pampered by an enveloping caress.

Other therapeutic pools filled with this water treated in different ways by the team of Dr. Cerina, are used for the treatment of certain diseases and for dermocosmesis.

The salt is hygrothermal and purifying, and the monastery water has a balancing power: the synergistic effect of the two elements is central to the therapy philosophy of this place. Through the use of advanced dermocosmetic treatments and modern technologies such as radio frequency and microdermabrasion, the criteria of a preventive and curative medicine, the aim of which is psychophysical well-being, are here applied.

In addition to the thousands of square feet of the spa, Relais San Maurizio offers its guests a magnificent park and a panoramic outdoor swimming pool with a beautiful view of the hills covered with moscato grapes vineyards.

The 30 rooms and suites were the product of a careful conservative restructuring, they are all different from each other. Most of them have been created from the old monks’ cells which are located in the main villa, while the suites are in the mill and in the old monastery stables.
The architecture, decorations, ornaments and atmosphere of absolute tranquility are the same as the original structure.

In the monastery cellars, nestled among the vineyards of Barolo, Barbaresco and Moscato, you will also find the legendary ‘Guido da Costigliole’ restaurant, famous for its selection of wines and spirits. Here Andrew, the founder’s son, along with Monica Magnini and chef Luca Zecchin offers regional cuisine dishes that have earned the coveted Michelin Star.

During your stay at the Relais San Maurizio do not miss the small town of Neive, one of the most beautiful in Italy, and the Canelli winecellars, splendid underground cathedrals of wine, and world heritage site.
