Brunello Cucinelli, a fine wire that is wrapped in culture

Brunello Cucinelli

The gentle Solomeo hill in Umbria is the cradle of philosophy and of the valuable Brunello Cucinelli cashmere production. An oasis of humanist values to which the company culture is inspired, submerged in a halo of beauty coming from the surrounding area.

This Italian fashion house’s prestigious brand is synonymous with exclusive luxury all over the world, with its casual-chic clothing and accessories. Success came with the experience, the passion and the expertise of its founder, who embarked on this adventure in 1978 in Perugia, where knittingis an already established productive activity. The company was successful and the need to renew and give new impetus to the brand development pushed Cucinelli to make the leap, by specializing in a single product, but choosing the crookedest street: cashmere.

A sophisticated and extremely specialized material. Out of the whole fleece, only the hair on a limited area under the goat’s throat is used for the production of cashmere. This peculiarity is extraordinary: it seems that these animals have developed under their outer coat, longer and durable, an undercoat made up of thousands of soft and fine fibers concentrated in a small area, in order to survive in a hostile habitat characterized by extremely cold and windy weather, or by very hot summers. The soft wire arrives in Italy for processing from the herds of “hircus” goats in Afghanistan, India, China and Mongolia. Once a year, when temperatures are milder, the shepherds collect the undercoat with a gentle combing process, completely harmless to the animals. Each goat produces about 250 grams of undercoat a year. The processing then takes place in the Brunello Cucinelli laboratories in Solomeo. Here cashmere is interpreted with care and meticulous execution in every chromatic note. The seams are handmade one by one according to the tradition, in the wake of medieval monastic factories, in order to create exclusive and tailor made bespoke collections.

Equally special is the history of this village on the outskirts of Perugia, where Cucinelli bought the fourteenth century castle in 1985 and where, after a two years restoration, he moved the company permanently to fulfill the dream of a humanistic business. For history and architecture lovers, the village as it was and as it has been transformed today, is a land of toys. Built in the late twelfth century and the first half of the thirteenth, it is developed on a previous farm complex, called Villa Solomei and located near the road that connected Castiglion del Lago, Perugia and Chiusi in the Middle Ages. The core, of very small proportions in 1361, was later fortified with the construction of the castle.

Cucinelli was dazzled by these old buildings, the territory, the evergreen forests, the old Villa Antinori, so he decided to give the village of Solomeo new life and vitality with the activities of his company, by convincing the owner that his affection for that place was great, and by treating that ancient heart reverently. This way the spirituality of Solomeo was preserved and revived through the construction of the new Forum of the Arts, opened in 2008, where you can meet and meditate amidst gardens and shady trees, in front of a theater and an outdoor amphitheater. The architecture of the theater has exceptional elegance and proportion, and was inspired by late Renaissance Sabbioneta and Parma (Farnese) plants. The large amphitheater was designed for cultural events and outdoor performances. And then the restored building of the Neo-Humanistic Academy, training center for young people who want to learn the knowledge to a “larger craftsmanship”, the Academy, the Library and the Garden of the Philosophers.

Aspiring to a modern humanistic craftsmanship, where the quality of life is as important as that of the product, recently brought to the creation of the Brunello Cucinelli Foundation, whose first objective is the recovery of the “everyday-practice authenticity” in work, family and recreation. The Foundation completes the humanistic, educational and social activity taking place in the polyhedral structures that populate the village.
