Red from the Sea, the magic of Carloforte coral

Coral is an ancient tradition in San Pietro. It dates back to 1738, when the island was colonized by the inhabitants of Tabarka, a Ligurian colony property of the Lomellini family, then lords of Pegli, who had populated it with fishermen with the aim of exploiting its rich coral reefs.

Today, almost 300 years later, this land expresses the very same passion for coral.

Then and now it’s people coming from afar, who put this precious material at the center of their work. Daniela Sansone, a native of Naples, moved here about thirty years ago, after spending an unforgettable holiday in the beautiful village of Carloforte. She dedicated herself with love to the Sardinian and Mediterranean coral, trying to convey this ancient knowledge to her two children, Perla and Marino.

The coral processing is very demanding, so Daniela’s challenge was combining such complex techniques with a never predictable creativity. In her creations the coral, which is traditionally a talisman symbol of life, health and prosperity, becomes a material to be molded, with which she expresses a modern and essential style. Like in the one hundred thousand knots necklace, a veritable cloud of lightness and color obtained thanks to a ‘solids and voids’ effect. Today, the work of this coral artist is moving towards the mixture of colors and materials. She is trying to get a strong color contrast, blending red tending to orange with the intense pink of “Bello di Sardegna” with corals from different places or semi-precious stones such as turquoise. But also with pottery in shades from gray to black, which many Sardinian artisans produce using ancient techniques, such as burning with ashes.

Daniela Sansone awaits you in her Carloforte laboratory, “Red from the Sea”, to lead you to the discovery of this blood-colored matter.
