Getting on the Bernina Express is entering a fairy tale

Vista panoramica dal Bernina Express

The famous red train connects Coira (Chur), the oldest city in Switzerland, with the small Tirano in Valtellina, passing through St. Moritz, along a spectacular route that smoothly runs from north to south and vice versa. For those looking for excitement, a trip on the Bernina Express is a unique experience that offers bold colors photographs on one of the most spectacular routes passing through the Alps. Towering firs, blue mirrors, and steep rocky slopes will be your exciting and wild traveling companions. The masterpiece of nature along the Bernina is the Albula / Bernina railway, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2008.

Excellence is also found in architecture. The path of the Bernina train winds through 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and slides toward gradients of up to 70 per thousand, without rack, to the Bernina Hospice, at 253 mt. altitude. These numbers make it the highest alpine route in Europe and one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. In this breathtaking scenario different cultural landscapes alternate as if they were shots of a magic wand: a few kilometers after departure from Tirano, you meet the first wonder, the Circular Viaduct at Brusio.

Bernina Express nel verde di PrimaveraThen you reach Poschiavo where the train starts climbing through tight bends up a very scenic wooded ridge, and gets to Alp Grüm at 2091 mt: a balcony overlooks Val Poschiavo with its beautiful patrician houses and the lake on whose shores rise the towns of Le Prese and Miralago. There are points where the comfortable red train carriages seem to touch the walls of the houses facing the street. From sweet panoramas to sumptuous crystal glaciers. One of these is the next station, the imposing Morteratsch that inevitably turns its gaze to the four thousand meters of sparkling snow of Pizzo Bernina and to the ridge that descends from the Pizzo Bianco.

From Pontresina, where the road branches off in the direction of inner Switzerland, towards Samedan-Coira, you will easily reach St. Moritz,  the queen of Engadina which combines luxury accommodation facilities with the extraordinary sophisticated beauty of its natural environment. Some other unmissable stops are also: the Lanswasser viaduct, the local museum of Bergün with a model of the Albula and of winding tunnels Bergün-Preda and the Garden of glaciers in Cavaglia where great potholes stand out in the shadow of Piz Palü, a fascinating geological phenomenon that has generated cavities in rocks. The Bernina Express is operated by Rhaetian Railway (RhB), which provides practical information, such as prices and hours of the train, at www.rhb.ch.
